From the start in Hyde Park we chased the cars down to Brighton via the Mall, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Bridge and the back streets of South London to a leafy spot under the M25 / A23 interchange. Next stop was Clayton Woods by Jack & Jill. There was a riding stables here until a couple of years ago – it’s now a “green” burial site
Final stop was Madeira Drive in Brighton where the finishers gather after crossing the finish line. Dusk came soon but everyone was smiling after a run with excellent weather. Little snippets from the commentary included a steam car that used 70 gallons of water along the way and a driver who passed his driving test the week before the run
Younger drivers are very much in evidence on the London to Brighton. Many of these cars have been handed down the generations and it’s normal to see the grand-daughter or grandson of the original owner at the wheel. A day at the wheel of one of these would be hard work but a great learning experience
