Rally Round
Rally Round Logo
Rally Round in May is Shelter's inaugural classic rally to Mulhouse in France. With a range of optional visits along the way, the highpoint of the rally will be a visit to the famous Schlumpf Museum, home to the world's finest collection of Bugattis

Full details of the event are on this page, and our Events Diary preview is here
The Schlumpf Collection
The Schlumpf Brothers
The Schlumpf Collection was the secret museum created by Fritz and Hans Schlumpf, owners of the Malmerspach spinning mill that now houses the collection. Driven to near-bankruptcy in the late 70s, the collection was discovered by the mill workers and major scandal ensued

Eventually bought by the state, control of the collection passed to Culture Espaces during 2000 and the site reopened as a culture and entertainment centre - based around the unique collection of French and Foreign cars assembled by the now-infamous Schlumpf brothers

Rally Round - updated 29/3/2002
Rally Round
Rally Round takes place on the 17th May 2002, but the format of the event has been changed from that originally advertised. The organisers have taken on board the views of those who have expressed an interest and have redesigned the event, reducing the cost of taking part

What is Rally Round?
On the 17th May, the inaugural Rally Round trip sets off from Dover, destination Mulhouse and the famous Schlumpf Collection. The aim of the event? To have an enjoyable trip to France, to drive great scenic roads, compete in the Treasure Hunt, eat wonderful French food in great company - and visit one of the world's best automotive museums!

There's also a serious side to the trip - you'll be raising money for charity and helping the homeless and less fortunate. Participants will be raising money for Shelter, who will guide you in finding sponsorship and advise on how to raise money

17th May 2002
After a rendezvous near the coast, Rally Round sets off from England on a channel crossing provided by Seafrance. From there you will take the Autoroute, or Route Nationale, through the rolling French countryside to historic Rheims - once home of the French Grand Prix. After arriving at the hotel at around 1800 you'll meet up with the other participants in the bar before enjoying a meal in a private room at the hotel

18th May 2002
Day two sees the trip heading off across the Champagne region towards Alsace and the Vosges. If you're a fan of the Route Nationales or the more minor roads there will be a route which takes you off the Peage and onto the country roads. After lunch near historic Obernai there's an optional Treasure Hunt for the more competitive teams with a questionnaire to be completed. From Obernai it's not far to Mulhouse and the overnight halt, so there will be time for sightseeing if you don't want to participate in the Treasure Hunt.

19th May 2002
The ultimate destination is the Schlumpf Collection, now part of the French National Heritage, with its unrivalled collection of more than 100 Bugattis amongst the 600 cars on display. The Museum opens at 0900, so we recommend an early start on Sunday morning to make the most of this fabulous collections of cars. From Mulhouse the teams set off for home, but will enjoy a final night in a delightful village just outside Rheims. There will be a none-too-serious contest on this leg for the Shortest Route back to your Hotel, so we'll be taking mileometer readings on Sunday morning!

At the Hotel - which is noted for its fine cuisine - you will have a very special dinner to celebrate the weekend. There will also be a prizegiving ceremony for the Treasure Hunt and the Shortest Route test. This will be the last night in France, and your last opportunity to enjoy the French cuisine and hospitality

20th May 2002
Back to England. On the way there will be optional stops for sightseeing, and we'll be recommending routes for both Autoroute and Routes Nationale

Who should come?
Anyone with a classic, or modern classic car, who would like to explore new areas on a brand new event in the company of like-minded people. Rally Round is not a race, but will cater for your competitive edge with an optional treasure hunt!

What's Included?
Your 3-night weekend includes ferry crossings, accommodation in 3 and 4 star hotels including dinner and buffet breakfast. Dinners include table wines and coffee, and we can promise good company! Your treasure hunt questionnaire comes complete with prizes for the winners - and you'll also have the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting Shelter

What will it cost?
The cost of the weekend is £299 per person based on two people sharing. There are a few single rooms available at a supplement of £88

This tour has been designed to support the national charity Shelter in their work with homeless and badly housed people across the UK. We would ask that every participant at least match the cost of the event in sponsorship (if you can raise more than the cost you are very welcome to do so!) Alternatively you can spread your financial support of Shelter, by signing a direct debit for £25 a month for a year. We will include two forms (one for each of the people in your car) to make it easy for you to donate to Shelter. Ticking the Gift Aid box will also make your direct debit donation more tax-effective

Who's organising the weekend?
Shelter has teamed up with Kelso Travel to provide this weekend away. Kelso Travel is an independent tour operator specialising in holidays that are just that little bit different

Places are limited, so please book early by completing the booking form and sending it with the full value to Kelso Travel at the address on the form payment may be made by cheque or credit card as you prefer
